Health Minister Jeremy Rockliff confirmed the death this morning.
"I can confirm that a man in his nineties has passed away at the Royal Hobart Hospital," Mr Rockliff said.
"I would like to pass on my sincerest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the man who has sadly passed away."
Meanwhile, new case numbers for COVID-19 have dropped after a trend of spiking cases.
Tasmania recorded 1 885 new cases, with active cases sitting at 12 790.
"While case numbers are currently elevated associated with the BA2 variant outbreak, hospitalisation rates remain low," Mr Rockliff said.
"There are currently 41 people in hospital with COVID and of these, 18 are being treated specifically for COVID.
One person remains in intensive care.
