Health Minister Jeremy Rockliff said following a clinical review by the Tasmanian Health Service, a man who died at the LGH on March 9 has been recorded as a COVID related death.
Mr Rockliff said the man who died was in his late 60s with underlying medical conditions.
The announcement follows a rise in COVID cases since the state's mask mandate was scrapped and the BA.2 variant became the dominant strain in Tasmania.
On Wednesday, new cases rose from 2324 to 2472, while the number of active cases in the state was recorded at 11,902, also up from the previous day.
People in the COVID@home program also rose from 1017 to 1139, as did people under observation in the state's community case management facilities from seven to 11.
Mr Rockliff said while case numbers were high the hospitalisation rates were low.
"While case numbers are currently elevated associated with the BA2 variant outbreak, hospitalisation rates remain low," he said.
"There are currently 22 people in hospital with COVID and of these, 10 are being treated specifically for COVID. There are currently two people being cared for in the ICU."
The government has continued to point to vaccinations as the best protection against COVID-19, and urged the public to stay up to date with their shots.
"The evidence remains clear that the most important thing you can do to protect yourself and your loved ones is to remain up to date with your COVID vaccination," he said.
"If you're due for your booster, please make a booking as soon as possible at either a state-run vaccination clinic, your local GP, or a pharmacy."
