Matt Hauser will return to his happy hunting ground that is the Devonport Triathlon on the weekend as somewhat of a man on a mission.

Hauser, who has tasted success as a junior and at the senior level in the city, will start his year with Commonwealth Games selection near the front of his mind.

The 23-year-old was part of the Australian team at the Tokyo Olympics, finishing 24th in the men's triathlon and ninth in the mixed relay where Tasmanian Jake Birtwhistle was a teammate.

Birtwhistle was 16th in the men's triathlon to be the best performed Australian.

"My fire is still brighter and hotter than ever and really motivated with those mixed emotions around the Olympic campaign with the Australian team and I really just want to come out guns blazing and just show the world that Australia is a competitor,'' Hauser said on Wednesday.

"Although it might take us a few years to get back to the top myself and the younger generation are really committed to bringing back some world success.

"Round two is just around the corner, and it is good we are back on the horse and get that opportunity to chase some success on a stage like the Commonwealth Games."

The road to the Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Birmingham, really will start on the weekend for Hauser, who won the men's elite/under 23 race in Devonport last year.

"Selectors are looking at every race now, but the main ones are the auto selection race in the Gold Coast in two months and in Yokohama in the first world series race of the year in May,'' he said.

"This race is basically a great way to show I am still fit and have a good practice run, and it is extremely important for me to expose yourself to racing as there is nothing like it."

Starting this journey at a place he genuinely loves will be a huge benefit.

"It is just a course that really just challenges all three disciplines of a triathlon and that really suits me as I am a front-end swimmer and I work hard on the bike before finishing off with the run, so for me to have that beach/ocean swim and that hill on the bike, I think it helps show the complete triathlete,'' he said.

"It helps with confidence and self belief and knowing roughly how the race is going to pan out.

"My form is a bit of an unknown having not competed since November, but I have been tracking well in training, feeling good and I can't wait to see how it all goes."
