The board met earlier in the week to receive a report on the games, which were due to be held in April 2022.
There were several topics under consideration including the health and safety of transplant recipients and financial concerns. As a result, the board passed the resolution that the games in April would be cancelled.
Transplant Australia chief executive Chris Thomas said the safety and wellbeing of the transplant community would always be the top priority.
"We know that this will come as an enormous disappointment, not only to the athletes, donor families, and volunteers who planned to attend the games, but also to the local Launceston community," he said.
"We will bounce back with a series of locally-based events designed for recipients to attend in their home state next year.
"These will be announced shortly and will help prepare our transplant community for participation in the World Transplant Games, to be held in [Perth, Australia, April, 2023]."
