The Northdown winery was chosen as a top-50 finalist from more than 6000 vineyards.

It was the only Tasmanian finalist from seven to come from the less recognised for wine-producing Cradle Coast region, with the others being Devil's Corner, Marion's Vineyard, Mewstone, Pooley, Small Wonder, and Stefano Lubiana.

The family-run Ghost Rock vineyard's nomination shows how it continues to punch above its weight as an emerging force on the wine scene.

The judges looked for Australia's best vineyards based on great winemaking, sustainable practices, and innovation.

Ghost Rock's increasing focus on organic production techniques will likely serve it well.

Since taking over the vineyard from his parents and expanding, talented winemaker Justin Arnold and wife Alicia Peardon have elevated Ghost Rock to another level.

Given the North-West Coast is not as known for viticulture as both the Tamar Valley and Coal River, the nomination is quite a remarkable achievement for Ghost Rock.

Tassie produces less than one per cent of Australia's wine, and the Cradle Coast region less than two per cent of that one per cent.

However, with new vineyards planted at Sassafras and Turners Beach, that could change.

Mr Arnold praised his vineyard manager, 27-year-old Izaak Perkins, for helping achieve Australia's top vineyard nomination.

"It means our team of people is doing an incredible job of lifting the standards of our work in the vineyard led by Izaak, and it means that viticulture in this area is going ahead in leaps and bounds," Mr Arnold said.

"You can't be a sustainable wine business without exceptional viticulture.

"To be a finalist validates the exceptional work our team does."

Mr Arnold said doing all the little things each day matters if you want to grow grapes to make good wine.

"Our viticulture program is about all the unseen things that give us the wines and accolades that we've got."

Mr Perkins said he'd been "hovering about the vineyard" since 17.

He was employed as a casual and worked his way up to vineyard manager.

He admitted at first; he knew a lot more about surfing than managing a vineyard.

"In 10 years, Izaak has blossomed into reengineering and driving the viticulture program." Mr Arnold said.

Coming from a lesser-known wine region usually meant having to do more to get noticed.

"That's a good thing because you are against the tide to a degree, and for us, that's great motivation to improve ourselves continually," Mr Arnold said.

"Vineyard work is a daily pursuit."

Ghost Rock has been increasing its organic grape growing program.

"We're bringing those organic management techniques to our more conventional blocks," Mr Perkins said.

Mr Arnold said winemaking is produce-driven and the vineyard the centrepiece.

"People want to know what sprays you use and how sustainable you are," he said.

"Our organic production is growing; we're starting to remove the use of herbicides. We're doing onsite composting. We use cover crops to help manage the under vine and bringing in sheep in winter helps control the grass and fertilise."

He said the shift to organic techniques was more work.

Mr Arnold said it was great to see more vineyards established in the Cradle Coast region.

"Anything that helps grow the region's profile is excellent," he said.

However, because of the Coast's greater diversity as a food-producing region, he did not think viticulture would ever exceed "all the other important ag industries here".

"The North-West has great viticulture land, and it's good for growing many other things, but that's quite different to Tamar Valley and Coal River, which are very viticulture driven areas."
