Under a newly released transition plan by the state government, the Ashley Youth Detention Centre will be decommissioned sometime between July 2023 and September 2024. The state government is also in the process of developing a 10-year "Youth Justice Blueprint" to shape the transition and has released a discussion paper for consultation. Children and Youth Minister Sarah Courtney encouraged stakeholders to come forward and contribute to the blueprint.
The government intends to begin implementing the as-yet-undetermined blueprint sometime in the second half of next year.
The transition plan also aims to develop and support the state's youth justice workforce, including the staff at the Ashley centre, though no firm plans have yet been outlined regarding what will happen to the staff when the site closes.
The state government has also not yet outlined the future of the site once it is decommissioned.
Labor's child safety spokeswoman Sarah Lovell criticised the transition plan for a lack of detail.
