Those heading to the pool on the first of December, a 28 degree day, were met with a sign reading "POOL CLOSED".
While some keen swimmers were still seen frolicking in the pool's blueish waters, it may be wise to consider the decision.
City of Launceston Mayor Albert Van Zetten said he understood the eagerness of users to get in the pool, and detailed the final preparations before it could be opened.
"Officers have refilled the pool and will re-install safety fencing early next week," he said.
"Following that, the pool will need to pass water safety tests before it can be given the all-clear for public use.
At this stage, it is our intention to reopen the Basin pool in time for the school holidays in approximately two weeks.
- Mayor Albert Van Zetten
Despite the pool not being reopened until then, he said security patrols would commence from the weekend with increased activity at the Gorge.
The pool last year was opened on November 27 with lifeguard patrols kicking off from December 5 and running until December 18.
Gorge visitors were regularly fascinated by a swelling and turbulent stream flowing towards the First Basin pool throughout a wet winter, and the cause for that fascination had delayed the pool's readiness.
Cr Van Zetten said the council's original plan was to reopen the pool in early November, but those plans had been "scuppered" by "prolonged flooding ... following a very wet spring".
He said there was also some "essential maintenance required on the pool itself" which had dragged out the reopening.
Pool patrols are also set to resume, coinciding with the reopening.
Cr Van Zetten said lifeguards would be back patrolling on a daily basis from 11am until 4pm once the pool was back up and running.
He said those patrols would also be active from February 9 through to March 27.
Then from February 9 through to March 27, lifeguards will again be on duty of a weekend from 11am to 4pm.
