A musical performance by Finlay Underwood and Jane Edwards helped launch the eighth Tasmanian Theatre Awards at the Moonah Arts Centre on Monday, with nominations now open.
Presented by the Theatre Council of Tasmania, the awards have been held annually since 2015 to recognise excellence and achievement in Tasmanian theatre.
The event's latest edition will take place on Saturday, March 5 at Wrest Point in Hobart, after finalists are revealed at a special event in Launceston in mid-January.
Theatre Council of Tasmania president Petr Divis said more than 30 awards are on offer in the categories of professional theatre, community theatre and musical theatre.
He said awards would also be presented in areas such as performance, direction and design, as well as for outstanding new writing to recognise recent and original Tasmanian works.
"The awards were originally started to raise the profile of Tasmanian theatre and provide an opportunity to come together and celebrate all of the amazing work being done by the theatre community," he said.
"We've delivered on that in spades over the last eight years, and we're thrilled to have had nearly 50 productions registered across Tasmania for the 2022 Awards ... that's an incredible number, and it speaks volumes about the vibrancy of the creative arts in our state and the ongoing enthusiasm for the Awards."
Mr Divis also said the prestigious lifetime achievement award would be presented to an individual who had contributed significantly and generously to Tasmanian theatre over a long period.

"There have been outstanding productions in all categories, and it's a major honour to be included in the final nominees," he said
"This is a night for us to share our love of theatre, support each other, be proud of what we've achieved and look forward to a brighter future for the performing arts in Tasmania ... it will be exciting to find out who the winners are and to celebrate their success with them."
Registered theatre productions are usually assessed during a single calendar year, from January 1 to December 31.
However, due to the impact of COVID-19 on live performances, the judging process has taken place over two years.
Despite some productions having been assessed at the start of last year, judges are still finalising several.
Nominations can only be made by members of the Theatre Council of Tasmania, and must be submitted before December 12.
