The Brunton-trained mare Kuroset tested positive to the prohibited substance after winning at Elwick on June 13.

She was disqualified from the race, with connections forfeiting $12,500 in stakemoney.

In not issuing Brunton with a disqualification - a far more serious penalty - stewards said they had taken into account his "recent efforts to prevent arsenic contamination at his property."

Arsenic positive swabs are usually attributed to horses chewing treated pine fencing.

Brunton's penalty will come into effect at midnight on Friday December 3 which means he can have runners at next Wednesday night's Newmarket Handicap meeting at Mowbray.

In the stewards' finding published on the ORI web site on Friday it stated that Brunton's record under the prohibited substance rules was "poor".

He has had four previous arsenic contamination cases and one therapeutic presentation case in the past six years.

His most recent arsenic case in November 2019 resulted in a $7000 fine.

His most recent positive swab, when Tasmanian Derby winner Vamos Raffa tested positive to an anti-inflammatory in February last year, cost him $13,500 in fines and his $9000 share of the stakemoney.

"Bearing these factors in mind and the effect on the image and integrity of the racing industry, stewards believe the logical progression in penalty is a short-term suspension of licence and a fine component," the published finding stated.

However stewards said they did take into consideration Brunton's guilty plea and forthright evidence and his personal circumstances which included the large scale of his business operation, financial commitments and staffing requirements.

The Seven Mile Beach trainer has the right of appeal.

Superior Wallis didn't live up to his owner's hopes at the start but it made no difference at the finish as he streeted his rivals in Friday's $35,700 Devonport Chase final.

Former AFL star Scott Wynd, who races the dog with his wife Jodie, thought Superior Wallis would need to ping the start from box 1 if he was to give them their first group 3 win.

Instead, the $3.30 second favourite was last to hit the ground but, fortunately, his rivals left a gap on the rail and he zoomed through to hit the front coming off the back straight.

It was no contest from then on, as Superior Wallis cruised home by 5-1/2 lengths from Victorian-trained Ferdinand Boy ($2.40 fav) with outsider Siberia ($81) 1-1/4 lengths away third.

Wynd, the former Western Bulldogs captain and 1992 Brownlow Medallist, sent Superior Wallis to Tasmania mid-year on the advice of his Victorian trainers David and Joyce Condon.

The dog joined the Nicole Howard kennel at Richmond and has since won seven of his 11 starts.

Howard said she was "very excited, almost speechless" to win the race, which had a first prize $25,000.

"This dog loves the Devonport track and the box helped immensely today," she said.

"He can be a bit hit-or-miss at the start and he didn't really begin but he's got high speed once he hits the ground.

"I can only thank the connections for trusting me with their dog."

Howard said Superior Wallis would remain in Tasmania for next month's group 1 Hobart Thousand series.

The two wholly Tasmanian-owned pacers contesting the 2021 Inter-Dominion in Sydney will come up against the two series favourites in Saturday night's opening heats at Menangle.

Ignatius, owned by Lyrae Rattray, has drawn the first heat where the favourite King Of Swing is quoted at $1.28. Ignatius is at $15.

Max Delight, owned by Mick Maxfield, is in the second heat where Expensive Ego is a $1.70 favourite. Sportsbet has Max Delight at $10.

At least two other runners are part-owned by Tasmanians including Spirit Of St Louis who has been backed from $4.80 to $2.80 to win the third heat.

Mach Dan ($17) who will start alongside Ignatius in heat 1, is part-owned by Latrobe businessman Warren Viney.

The second round of heats will be at Bathurst on Wednesday night with the third round at Newcastle the following Sunday.

The $500,000 final is at Menangle on December 11.

King Of Swing is currently favourite for the final at $2.20 with Expensive Ego at $3.80 and nothing else under figures.

Harness racing has a new representative on the Tasracing board.

Neil Grose will replace Joel Wallace who has retired after a six-year stint.

Racing Minister Jane Howlett said Grose was "a regular racegoer and has a strong interest in the future of harness racing.

"He is an experienced and well-credentialled business professional, with a strong background in private enterprise," she said.

"He has also worked across a diverse range of sectors including local government, manufacturing, primary industry, retail and professional services."

Grose is the president of the Launceston Tornadoes Basketball Club.

Howlett also announced that Gene Phair, Tasracing chairman since late 2018, has been reappointed for another term.
