Harvey of Launceston won the street stock title at Easter at the end of last season in his Commodore.

With the schedule changing, the title is to be contested this weekend and with just one race meeting completed in the first six weeks of the season, Harvey could set the record for the shortest ever reign as champion.

That is a record he doesn't want.

The 28-year-old City of Launceston surveyor, will be surveying the field to see if he can claim back-to-back championships, and acknowledges the strong backing from sponsors is critical in enabling him to compete at the front of the field.

Steven's father Bruce Harvey, his chief mechanic and crew chief, has also raced extensively over the years, and has guided his son throughout his racing from the junior sedan category.

Street stocks produce some of the toughest wheel-to-wheel racing on the planet and with a field of 46 entries, a solid run though the heats will be essential for a good starting position in the 30-lap final.

The fact they race in both directions always produces some intrigue.

Over half the field are certainly viable chances of victory. Some of the main protagonists include five-time champion Troy Russell who, if he finishes, has been on the podium an incredible nine times.

Nathan Russell won the championship at Carrick in 2019 and should do well, while former champions Matt Templar and Corey Bauld are always fast. Bauld won this season's only final at Latrobe a fortnight ago.

Other hard chargers capable of winning include brothers Matt and Terry Hammond, Dale Riley Jr, Matt Atkinson and Mat Crawford.

All competitors will complete three heats over ten laps with the top 16 progressing to the A main.

Two B mains allow the top three from each to start at the back of the 22-car field for the final.

With extra racing scheduled, the action starts at 4pm and features the first round of the sprintcar series, formula 500s, modifieds, wingless and the Tassie sixes.
