The 81-year-old man who allegedly attacked a woman in her own home and started a fire has appeared unrepresented by a lawyer in the Burnie Magistrates Court.
Ian Andrew Mackenzie appeared in the court on Monday charged with aggravated burglary, wounding and arson.
On Sunday Tasmania Police and emergency services attended the Beach Retreat Caravan Park at Wynyard.
Police said a woman had been assaulted and was taken to the North West Regional Hospital with head injuries.
The Tasmania Fire Service was also required to extinguish a blaze which police said started shortly after the assault.
Mr Mackenzie was taken into custody overnight and on Monday morning police said charges had been laid.
Mr Mackenzie chose not to seek legal representation and unsuccessfully applied for bail.
Magistrate Glen Hay remanded Mr Mackenzie in custody to appear before the court again on December 7.
