It is understood that the man escaped a quarantine hotel by climbing down a third-storey balcony after midnight on Thursday.

Tasmania Police were able to track the man down later at a Newham address at 10am.

Premier Peter Gutwein said the man arrived in Tasmania on a flight from Sydney without an approved G2G pass and was directed into hotel quarantine at Peppers Seaport Hotel.

He said the man was discovered missing from the hotel during a routine check in the morning.

Mr Gutwein said the man had limited contact with members of the public during his time out of quarantine.

He said Public Health were awaiting COVID-19 test results.

Tasmania Police in a statement said the man had been charged with one count of fail to comply with a direction of an emergency management worker and would appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court at 8pm.

This is the second breach from a hotel quarantine facility in as many months.

A person can be fined $1557 in Tasmania for breaching quarantine requirements.
