CAROLS BELONG IN CITY PARK
HOW disappointing that, for the second year running, Carols by Candlelight will not be held in City Park.

Last year, this popular community event was cancelled because of COVID-19 restrictions, but this year, the reason appears to be that the organisers found the increasing costs of staging the Carols, in City Park, were beyond their financial resources.
While members of the general community will no doubt be pleased that the Carols will be going ahead, outdoors at the Country Club, next month, I'm sure that many folk will be hoping that this is just a one-off situation.

No doubt Country Club will provide an enjoyable and safe setting for those who attend this year, and we are all grateful for that.
But on a permanent basis, surely with the backing of the City of Launceston council, a way can be found to return Carols by Candlelight to City Park, which is a beautiful, peaceful, spacious, easily accessible venue that belongs to everyone in the community and has served us so well in the past.

TAMAR NEEDS INFORMED DEBATE
I DETECT a touch of the Dunning-Kruger effect in the wishful thinking of proponents for a Tamar Lake.
According to Peter Millar (The Examiner, November 14) "The science for the construction of barrages and formation of freshwater lakes is accepted worldwide".
Anyone with a rudimentary understanding of estuarine science knows this is the exact opposite to scientific reality.
Not one of these structures would receive endorsement today, given the advancements in estuarine science.
Dig a little deeper behind the glossy spin and the negative repercussions far outweigh the positives.
This is not the forum for a lecture on Estuarine Science 101, but I recommend to all those well-meaning folk of TAG - do your research, search Google Scholar, read the peer-reviewed science and let's have some informed debate.
Dr Ian Kidd (estuarine scientist), West Launceston.
HORSE RACING INDUSTRY
FOR all the glamour and riches of horse racing, it still does not alter the fact that in many ways it is a cruel sport where most horses are viewed as a commodity.
What distresses me is the use of the whip.
We have been informed many times that they love to race, why is the whip used and at times excessively.
On many occasions, I have witnessed horses that are so traumatised after a race by this action that I have felt sickened to my stomach.
I have very little respect for trainers and owners and even less for breeders, who are so focused on the dollar sign and have little compassion or love of these beautiful creatures.

THANKS FOR THE UPGRADE
JUST wanted to say a huge thanks to the Launceston City Council for the upgraded parent facilities at the Paterson Street car park.
What a well thought out, comfortable and beautiful area to take care of the little ones while out and about.
Thanks for thinking of us parents, it's much appreciated.
Jess Anon, Launceston.
