Health Minister Jeremy Rockliff provided an update on Sunday when he visited the South Launceston Youth Clinic.
He said so far 87 per cent of Tasmanians over the age of 16 have had their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, with 71.6 per cent fully vaccinated
"Yesterday, we hit another major milestone, with over 50 per cent of 12 to 15-year-olds having received a first dose," he said.
"It's quite understandable for people to be concerned about ensuring we do have the opportunity to vaccinate our 5 to 12 year old's, those matters are being sought through now with federal jurisdictions."
He said that in the past few days, Tasmania had reached another landmark with over 70 per cent of the state being fully vaccinated.
"I implore Tasmanians that the best defense against COVID-19 is to be vaccinated," he said.
"Particularly when it comes to December 15 when we open up our borders, we need to protect ourselves, our community and our loved ones."
He commended the tireless efforts of the state's nurses, pharmacists, doctors, administration staff and volunteers.
He urged those in the North who haven't had the jab to not wait any longer.
"When our borders open in December, we will see cases of coronavirus, and it will be a pandemic of the unvaccinated," he said.
