Created in 2016 from the merger of four Australian abalone producers, Yumbah Aquaculture is growing momentum as a major player in the Australian shellfish industry, most recently purchasing a 50-year-old oyster farm in South-East Tasmania back in July this year.
Outside of Tasmania, Yumbah operates two abalone farms in South Australia's Port Lincoln and another at Narrawong in Victoria.
After inspections from the ASC, all the company's land-based abalone farms received certification for their sustainable practices.
Back in 2019, the company's Bicheno site was crowned Australia's best seafood producer at the National Seafood Industry Awards.
Yumbah chief executive David Wood said the ASC certification was an impressive milestone for the growing aquaculture company.
"Yumbah's always taken a responsible approach to farming. One of the key things is that we employ staff that care about what they do and that are passionate," he said.
With the approval in hand, Yumbah can now advertise its products with the ASC "Responsibly Farmed" label.
"There is a growing awareness across the entire aquaculture of the need for sustainability practices," Mr Wood added.
