Launceston Airport will be hosting a myriad of events all foregrounding the various safety measures in place at the site, as well as safety precautions travelers should be aware of.

The campaign - which is part of a collaboration between the Australian Airports Association and the NZ Airports Association - starts up on Monday under the banner "Airport Safety through a global pandemic".

Perhaps the quaintest of the events is a colouring competition aimed at children traveling through the airport next week. Children not jumping on a flight won't be missing out though as colouring submissions can also be placed online.

Also included during the week are aircraft rescue demonstrations and firefighting displays, as well as hazard hunts and foreign object debris walks.

All in all, around 20 activities are being run during the week, focusing on physical safety and how to identify risks as well as health and wellbeing measures.

In a fitting turn of events, this year's roster of activities has been altered to ensure the safety of the event in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating the airports commitment to practice what they preach.

For Launceston Airport chief executive Shane O'Hare the week proves that when it comes to safety, aviation sets the gold standard. "So whether it's airlines, airports or anything associated with aviation, we endeavor to maintain that heightened awareness of safety and the activities this week help us bring that to the public's attention," he said.

He went on to say that, pre-COVID, the airport worker community numbered up to 500 - taking into account not just the airline workers but also the ground traffic handlers, firefights right the way to the rental car companies - which all require a holistic approach to safety.

It isn't just physical safety the week is putting into focus. Thursday's events will zone in on mental health safety, with guest speakers and mental health and wellbeing signage on display.
