Queenstown residents are being urged to stay indoors to protect themselves from fumes from a big tyre fire.
Police have encouraged residents to stay indoors and stop smoke entering their homes by closing windows and doors and turning off air-conditioning units.
The fire is at the Mount Lyell mine.
"A large number of car and truck tyres are alight, causing a significant amount of smoke in the area," police said.
They said they remained at the scene as the Tasmania Fire Service responded to the overnight fire.
Police said they would provide further advice when it was available.
The mine, owned by Vedanta Resources and up for sale, has been on care and maintenance since 2014.
