An early morning fire at St Marys has devastated a small rural property despite the best efforts of the Tasmania Fire Service.

Crews were alerted to the fire on Germantown Road at 8.32 on Wednesday morning and attended in force.

When they arrived a building was fully alight, and they immediately commenced works to get the blaze under control.
A TFS spokeswoman said the works ultimately proved to be in vain when by 10am a building had been completely destroyed.
"The building is on the ground and everything is pretty much gone," she said.
She sad an investigation would start into the cause of the fire, with the damage bill estimated to be up to $150,000.
