Fresh from leading the Greater Northern Raiders to four straight wins, the 29-year-old and her Hobart Hurricanes teammates will relish a home advantage with the first 24 matches of the 59-game Women's Big Bash League season to be played in Tasmania.

The big stage will not intimidate a player whose cricket career began in similarly testing circumstances half her life ago.

"Looking back now it was probably a bit scary but at the time I didn't know any different," Moloney said of playing with her home-town junior boys' team.

"We had quite a young team so I played with all my friends that I went to primary school with so we were about 12 but playing under-16s.

"There was no women's cricket and no female teams so the only way I could play was to play with the boys so it was probably how I learned to play shots off the back foot because they definitely dug it in sometimes.

"They were used to it because that's all they knew as well. The opposition were a bit funny although there was one other girl, Kate Fryett, who played at Bracknell, but other than that, it was just what we knew."

Progressing from Longford Primary to St Patrick's College, the 160-centimetre batter and off-spin bowler soon joined Fryett in Tasmanian women's teams, developed her game with spells in the Netherlands and Ireland, signed with the Hobart Hurricanes for the inaugural WBBL competition in 2015-16 and was made captain three years later.

With 46 WBBL matches to her name, Hobart-based Moloney is keen to add to her 239 runs and improve her 11.38 average.

The tournament kicks off with the Sydney Sixers taking on the Melbourne Stars at Bellerive Oval on Thursday with the Hurricanes' first match at the same venue against the Melbourne Renegades at 3.40pm on Saturday.

Now captained by Rachel Priest, the side then face the Sixers on Sunday and the Stars on Tuesday before heading north for games against the Adelaide Strikers at Invermay Park (October 23) followed by the Brisbane Heat (October 26) and Stars (October 27) at UTAS Stadium.

"It's really exciting to be able to play this many games here," Moloney said.

"For the first week or so we'll be in Hobart and then when we come up here and being able to be with my family it will feel like home for a good half of the tournament before we head over to Perth and Mackay.

"Last year we were in a hub so didn't get to play any home games so I know that those who play in the Hurricanes know how special it is to come up to Launnie because the crowd usually really get behind it.

"It's going to be really exciting for me to play at home and hopefully in front of some decent crowds as well.

"We have not played in Launceston for a little while but have played at UTAS and Invermay in the past and I'm hoping the drop-in wickets will be really decent."

Having cut her teeth as a captain with the Hurricanes and Tigers, Moloney assumed the Greater Northern Raiders' leadership from Caitlyn Webster this season and has overseen a perfect start of four straight wins.

The all-rounder has been pivotal, opening the batting in every game to accumulate 108 runs at 36.00 with a best knock of 37 not out.

With the ball, the right-arm off-spinner has taken six wickets at 7.17 with a best of 3-6 in the season-opener against New Town and also chipped in with four catches.

However, Moloney did not field in Sunday's thrilling win over Clarence due to injury and admitted it was a difficult watch as Ruth Johnston claimed a last-ball run-out.

"I had a bit of a quad and with the WBBL about to start we thought it was best to err on the side of caution. It should be fine, it's just tightness," she said.

"I was on the edge of my seat for sure. I looked away for a bit and didn't realise just how tight it got but I'm glad we held our nerve and having an experienced player like Ruth at the end there really helped.

"It's been a really good start. We didn't have this luxury last year and got off to a much tougher start.

"Being a few games clear makes a big difference in T20 cricket and hopefully we can continue the streak, but we know every team is going to be tough to play against so getting a few wins early is really handy."

The Raiders have a week off this weekend before returning with a double-header at North Hobart on Sunday, October 24.
