The former New Zealand power-hitter has been named the Hurricanes' captain for WBBL07, replacing Corinne Hall, who will play for the Sydney Thunder.
Priest, 36, brings to the role more than 160 games for her country, as well as many appearances in domestic competitions around the world, with this year her second in the purple.
The opener was the Hurricanes' player of the tournament last summer after scoring 354 runs on top of her wicketkeeping duties.
"It is a huge honour,'' Priest said on Friday about her elevation to the captaincy role.
"I love playing for the Hurricanes and I loved last season. Obviously it didn't go to plan with the results, but I had a great time and I really love this group.
"To be asked to be the leader of this group is really special and I just hope we can go a few games better this season and get a few more wins on the board."
She admitted she would spend plenty of time "leaning on the other senior players" for support throughout the tournament with one specific aim for all.
To win the tournament.
"I'm super confident,'' Priest said.
"I think we have got some absolutely x-factor players in our group.
"We have fast bowlers, good spinners and people that can clear the rope as well, so honestly I am really, really confident.
"In T20 cricket anything can happen and we will have the home ground advantage for a lot of our games [with WBBL07 starting in Tasmania next week].
"We want to win this comp and I think we have the team to do it."
Hobart Hurricanes coach Salliann Beams said it was a unanimous choice for Priest to be appointed captain.
Beams said Priest's ability to bring a level of calm to the group would be one of her greatest strengths.
"If you look at Preisty's performances over the last year for the Hurricanes, but more importantly in domestic competitions around the world, she gets up for the most important games and has been very good in dominating key bowlers,'' Beams said.
Tasmania will host the first 24 matches of the 59-game WBBL07 season after four additional matches were fixtured at UTAS Stadium on Thursday.
The Hurricanes will play their first match of WBBL07 at Blundstone Arena against Melbourne Renegades on October 16.
Their first game in the North of the state will be on October 23, at Invermay Park.
