IMPORTS AND DOWNSIZING
AS a consumer I have noticed the supermarket where I regularly shop has stealthily been replacing quality, local or favoured brands for their own brand. Shelf after shelf.

Eventually, we may only be able to buy a supermarket's brand on all stock, no choice.

The contents could come from anywhere in the world. Concerning many countries, food handling regulations are not as strict as Australia's. The lowest price sourced adds to the profit for shareholders.

FRENCH DUMMY SPIT
I REFER to Barry Prismall's column (The Examiner, September 26). Mr Prismall, I take my hat off to you for one of the best editorials I have read for a long time.
The points in history are spot on, and as far as a dud deal by Malcolm Turnbull, I could not believe it at the time it was announced.
Nuclear was always the way forward and I bloody near cried when I heard of this stupid declaration. The cost blowout from the French is eyewatering at best.

People forget about the French nuclear tests, Rainbow Warrior, the Australians that died supporting France.
Your piece was brilliant, thank you.
Shame history isn`t still taught in schools.
Great read Mr Prismall.

LAUNCESTON'S INTEGRITY
WONDERFUL to hear that guests of the proposed Gorge Hotel will have "stunning views from their rooms", sad for the rest of us who will no longer enjoy the fabulous vistas of the gorge entrance.
Presently one can look up from many parts of the city and be delighted by the atmosphere and the spectacular Cataract Gorge entrance supplies.
This will undoubtedly be diminished by this incongruous design that will dominate the kanamaluka junction of the Tamar and The Esk tributaries.
Surely anything of this height belongs in the vicinity of The Silos, where it will not dominate the cityscape to the detriment of residents and tourists who don't get to stay at this hotel, a privilege it appears we will pay for dearly.
Given we know that Tasmania is a highly desirable destination, why are we selling off our best opportunities to those who seem to put minimum effort into integrating their projects into the community when we could be holding out for the best, most innovative and sensitive proposals that will be an enhancement to Launceston?

A MONGREL COUNTRY
TONY Newport (The Examiner, September 24) refers to Australia being "a mongrel country" providing examples of Federal government action to support this view.
The present treatment of the Murugappen family fits this category.

For what reason, other than abject cruelty, cannot Alex Hawke, the relevant minister, free this family to return to Biloela where they would be loved and supported?
This family represents absolutely no threat to our security and would be model citizens.
This case also illustrates how this government has no problems in wasting countless millions in pursuing the need to be seen as tough. As a country, we should be better than this.
