The 84-year-old was the sole occupant of the vehicle that struck a power pole about 1.45pm on Heathcote Street.
A Tasmania Police spokesperson said early investigations showed the driver had been reversing from a driveway when the car "aggressively lurched backwards" before hitting the power pole.
The woman was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to the North-West Regional Hospital where she later died from her injuries.
Sergeant Scott Poke said the full circumstances of the crash have yet to be determined and will be looked into by the Western District Road Safety Services investigators.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is encouraged to contact Tasmania Police on 131 444.
