Inspector Brian Edmonds, who was keen to see a close match between Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs on Saturday, said police were encouraging those celebrating to do so safely.
"With AFL grand final day traditionally busy for Tasmania Police, we're urging anyone celebrating the match [on Saturday] to do so responsibly," he said.
An increased police presence will be seen across the state, especially around entertainment precincts and licensed venues, on the evening of the match.
"While [Saturday's] grand final will be somewhat different with a night match, as with previous years police will be out and about across the state making sure everyone is celebrating safely," Inspector Edmonds said.
"Anyone found to be unruly or engaging in offences ... can expect to face infringements or face the courts if the matter is serious."
With low levels of snow forecast for the weekend, Inspector Edmonds urged anyone who would be driving to drive to the conditions.
"There have been far too many incidents on our roads [which have led] to serious and fatal crashes," he said.
"If you're planning on drinking, please remember to look after your mates and never get behind the wheel of a vehicle if you're under the influence."
For anyone planning on celebrating at home, the message from the police was to remember to be respectful of neighbours and ensure music would not bother those living nearby.
