OLD-FASHIONED CAKE SHOPS
I CAN remember back to my younger days when Mum used to take us to the local cake shop. There we drooled over the finger buns, cream puffs and all the other delicious cakes that were part of the food display.

Mum bought a sponge, took it home and filled it with other glorious things and we usually had it for Sunday's afternoon tea and any leftovers went to our lunches through the week (rarely).
Since the closing of Elphin Continental Cakes in Launceston, I can't find another cake shop in the vicinity where you can have the same pleasure of admiring all the things that are bad for us without partaking.

A MONGREL COUNTY
WHAT a mongrel country we have become.
We talk about allies for life in forever partnerships whilst at the same time we are reneging on multi-billion-dollar deals.
We espouse humanitarian values and at the same time treat genuine refugees as economic asylum seekers on the make.
We spruik that our defence will get whatever funding it takes and then we fudge around the existential threat of climate change. We have become the country of big announcements to the detriment of nuance, transparency and accountability.
We could have and should have handled our relationships with China and the US with far greater tact and diplomacy and less bull horn self-righteousness and chest beating. We could have also purchased nuclear submarines from the French in the first place. Empty vessels it would appear really do make the most sound.
Tony Newport, Hillwood.
FAMILY-DEPRIVED FEELINGS
MY son, his partner and our grandson live in Sydney. Before COVID-19 we used to travel up to our grandson's birthday and they would come down for Christmas/New Year, but have missed the last two years of getting together.
We realise many families across Australia are also in this family-deprived situation due to COVID.
The saddest thing is that our grandson, who is 9, said to us the other day that all those with COVID, those who don't want to be tested or vaccinated should all be put in the one place so people can start visiting their family and friends again.
What a great idea out of one so young.
Alan Leitch, Austins Ferry.
WHAT ARE OUR PRIORITIES?
BILLIONS wasted on a cancelled deal for toys of war. Unspecified billions more available for a submarine deal with no details.
- $10 billion over 20 years for wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
- $1.2 billion to settle the Robodebt fallout.
- $30 million for a plot of land in Sydney worth $3.
- Car park rorts and sports rorts to win an election.
Yet the NDIS is unaffordable and unsustainable. Priorities?
