Earlier this year, the Launceston Global Shapers Hub collaborated with the other hubs across Australia to run the Foundations for Tomorrow project, conducting a large youth survey to discuss what we need to lead change around as we recover from the impact of COVID-19 restrictions.

We had a strong response from Tasmanians which was fantastic, and nationally, over 10,000 people responded, with 65 per cent of those taking part under the age of 25, showing that it does reflect what our young people think and feel.
Throughout the report there are a number of statistics that just reflect the passions and perspectives of young people, strongly articulated with numbers and percentages, and hopefully reports like this will lead to change and action.
But in reading the document, one of the comments stood out to me about leadership.
"Young people don't require perfection, but they are calling for ambitious action and strong leadership to rebuild trust."
When asked what would enable more trust in Australian leaders across government and industry, almost half of the respondents said action.
Is it that simple?
Have we spent so much time playing political games that action and being empowered to do the things people want us to do have fallen by the wayside?
Reflecting on my own journey as a young person, I have been involved in some of the events and sessions around engaging young people in politics, and am passionate about educating about the political process - but it does all fall away when leadership does not act and do the things that we need them to do.
Don't get me wrong, our leaders definitely acted when it came to putting COVID-19 restrictions in place, and that has kept us safe in our state.
But as we recover and rebuild, we need the same boldness, strong community and leadership to lead us to a better future.
As stated in the Awareness to Action report: "What young Australians are asking for is not radical. Arguably, it is simply a restoration of our democratic system as it was intended. Action, stability and transparency are the ingredients required to rebuild the trust that young Australians want to have in their leaders."
