The man was first reported missing about 8pm yesterday when he had fallen overboard a fishing vessel.
A Tasmania Police spokesperson said they hold "grave concerns for his welfare" due to the weather overnight and low water temperatures.
The Tasmania Police Westpac Rescue Helicopter and a fixed-wing aircraft from AMSA will be used in the search.

A fisherman is still lost at sea after falling overboard a fishing boat last night.
The search for the crew member started about 8pm when the man was first reported missing in the waters east of Tasmania's Flinders Island.
However, Tasmania Police in cooperation with the Australian Marine Safety Authority stopped the search after weather conditions proved too challenging.
A police spokesperson said the emergency response aircraft was unable to fly low enough to be able to spot the missing man. The spokesperson said all they could see were whitecaps in the water.
Strong winds, cool water temperatures and swells up to two metres were recorded in the area overnight.
The spokesperson said the response team will continue to assess weather conditions and suitability of resuming the search.
