The Derby institution on 78 Main Street is known by locals as "The Crack House," jokingly named for its once cracked walls. But, the house also has a very interesting history.
The property sold for $1.31 million on Saturday, which came as a shock to the real estate team and those in attendance.
The auction attracted large crowds and a lot of attention not just by those in attendance, but numerous phone bidders from the mainland and across Tasmania who were keen to get their hands on the unique property.
It was described by real estate agency Knight Frank as a property that is "unashamedly loud, mischievous, proudly local and ready to take centre stage in Derby's electrifying transformation".
The late Jeffery Hayes, who was the former owner, had a makeshift bar in the house and was known to have many parties and gatherings with the community there, sometimes even featuring a live band.
He also had mountain bike legends sign their names onto the walls of the house when they visited.
The avid mountain biker played a large part in the community of Derby as it grew to be a mountain biking mecca.
After the tragic loss of Mr Hayes last year, the house was put up for auction by his family.
Knight Frank real estate agent Justin Wiggins was astonished by the final figure. "What sold is a very unique block of land, over 2500 metres in size," he said.
"We have had huge interest in the property, not just for those interested in purchasing but those locals who have strong memories of the house. In my 15-years of real estate I've never seen an auction like this."
Mr Wiggins said Derby is by far the hottest property market currently in Tasmania with "the best mountain bike trails in Australia".
He said the lucky person who nabbed the property was a man with a family who wanted to "be part of Derby". He added that the new owner was bidding via his phone whilst on his mountain bike, which is very fitting.
"The house is right in the trail head, amongst the other shops and businesses in Derby and it will be exciting to see what will happen to the property in the future," he said.
