The bridge over the North Esk is now open, offering pedestrians and cyclists alike a safe and accessible journey between the Inveresk precinct through to the CBD.
City of Launceston mayor Albert van Zetten said the timing couldn't be better.
"This is a vital new connection for Launceston that brings our city together, linking our beautiful parks and CBD with a vibrant sporting, cultural and educational hub," he said.
"Seeing our community crossing this stunning new bridge to enjoy one of the country's biggest sporting events is a perfect celebration of this addition to our city."
University of Tasmania Pro Vice-Chancellor for Launceston Professor Dom Geraghty said the bridge was integral to the development of the university's new campus.
"The bridge will encourage people to come and explore, learn and collaborate with each other at Inveresk, with a strong connection to the river and history of this significant place "
An initiative of the Launceston City Deal, the bridge forms part of stage one of the $260 million Inveresk campus development.
Spanning from bank to bank, it also features ramp exits to ensure ease of access onto the existing pathways on either side of the river.
Once the university's Willis Street building constructed - scheduled for completion at the end of 2023 - the bridge will then be extended over Boland Street and continue onto a pathway through to Cimitiere Street.
