Police are searching for a dog after reports a child was mauled in an incident in Devonport on Wednesday night.

The seven-year-old girl was taken to Launceston General Hospital with serious injuries to her face, head, neck, and jaw after police say she was attacked while visiting a house in Nicholls Street.
Tasmania Police said in a statement the girl was attacked by a dog belonging to the residents of the property, but that dog had since been removed from the home.

"Police attended the residence last night where the incident occurred," they said.
"The dog had been removed from the property and the owner refused to disclose its location to police.
"Police will be conducting further enquiries with the dog owner and council today to locate the dog."
