Finishing the regular season fifth on the ladder, coach Mark Prior said a few weeks ago his team wasn't thinking about finals.
Now, OLs will face Old Scotch at George Town on Saturday for a chance to play in the NTFAW grand final against Launceston Football Club the following weekend.
"The girls have worked hard and it has come to fruition," Prior said.
"Scotch are very good, they are well prepared and well coached, so we will need to get over them first."
The only likely change to the OLs list for this weekend will be the return of Genevieve Dalco, who has missed the past two weeks due to suspension.
OLs beat Scottsdale 2.2 (14) to 0.2 (2) in muddy conditions at Invermay Park on Sunday.
"We sort of got the worst of [the mud] and that was indicated by the low score, it just shows you how muddy it was," Prior said.
"Everyone just had to slug it out."
OLs' Lauren Sherman said the clash against Scottsdale was the biggest game they'd played all year.
"The girls did an amazing job. We all did our part," she said.
"It was just like playing the grand final again after losing to them in the grand final last year."
Finishing the regular season second on the ladder, Old Scotch put in a mighty three quarters after failing to score in the first against the Blues on Saturday.
Old Scotch managed to equalise twice in the last quarter but it wasn't enough, losing 2.4 (16) to Launceston's 3.4 (22).
Coach Deb Reynolds said the team tried something different in the first quarter and had to regroup after the break, but the players adapted well.
"I felt we came out really well [in the second quarter] but we fell short at the line," she said.
"They are a strong opponent and you've just got to play four quarters."
Now Old Scotch has its sights set on beating OLs in the preliminary final and getting another chance to even the score with the Blues.
"We will take a look at OLs because we have only had one opportunity to play them this year," Reynolds said.
"We had eyes on the game on Sunday.
"We will go in expecting a solid performance from OLs, they are very physical and we are ready for that."
Reynolds will be unavailable to play this weekend due to injury.
Old Scotch's Eliza Matthews said Reynolds presence on the field would be missed, but she had confidence in her coach.
Saturday's game will be the first preliminary final Matthews has played in.
"I am pretty exciting. We have to travel up to George Town, so that will be a nice road trip with the girls," she said.
