While September's Australian National Championships will change to a decentralised format due to COVID, Hawks' Ashlea Mawer said she was pleased with the selection.
"I remember getting the email about the team and the first thing I did was call my sister [Chelsea Mawer, former Hawk and current Devon player] and let her know and she was over the moon for me," the 25-year-old said.
"It was really exciting to be selected, as it was my first selection in an over-age team.
"I think it also felt more rewarding because I have worked really hard over the last year and a half to put myself in the best position physically on the netball court."
Mawer is joined by fellow Hawks talent, centre Jamie Symons.
"It's really exciting to be able to go away with Jamie," Mawer said.
"We know we have a pretty solid connection on the court. We also get on pretty well off the court too."
Five Cavaliers players were also named to the team. Netball Australia was forced to alter this year's national championships, which were slated to be held at Traralgon, Victoria. The netballing body said a decentralised tourney would replace it, with teams still getting the opportunity to compete in a format yet to be announced.
As well as the national call-up, Mawer scored an insane milestone of 1000 goals this season, eclipsing the total with a number of games remaining on the season.
"I think it's a combination of the relentless defence that we have to turn the ball over and the centre court feeding that allowed me to get there," she said.
