Encore Theatre Company's production of Mamma Mia suffered several postponements due to the pandemic.
The pushbacks meant not all of the original cast were able to return to their roles when the show was given the green light.
Encore Theatre announced on Thursday evening that the main role of Sophie would now be played by Tasmania's Lisa Thomas.
Thomas was drawn to auditioning for the role of Sophie as she felt a similarity between how close the character is to her mum and how close she is to her own.
"When I was 11, I saw [the Mamma Mia movie] for the first time with [my mum]," she said.
"I think the Slipping Through My Fingers scene is pretty special to me, but I also love the I Have A Dream sequences."
It was also Sophie's hopes, dreams, and thirst for world exploration that Thomas was drawn to when auditioning.
For those wondering how Thomas' Sophie will be different to those already portrayed in other adaptations, the actress will bring her own personality to the role.
Thomas said though she was now based in Melbourne, Tasmanian theatre was blossoming and she was excited to bring her Sophie to life.
"I think, particularly after the last 18 months, [the show] adds a whole different weight to a production being mounted," she said.
"All over the country we have seen theatre productions and the arts industry absolutely squashed. Getting this role and seeing this show mount provides so much hope."
Director Danny Gibson said Mamma Mia was Sophie's story and he was pleased the pivotal role had landed with Thomas.
"She is a happy, bubbly, talented Tasmanian who I know we will learn lots from and enjoy working with," he said.
"After such a long lead in, I am looking forward to getting on with the task - bringing this joyous and iconic musical to the Princess Theatre stage."
Mamma Mia will dominate the Princess Theatre stage from October 22 - November 6. Tickets are available on the Theatre North website.
