The Australian premiere of The SpongeBob Musical, from Stage Right Youth Theatre, will allow people of all ages to immerse themselves in a world of characters they know and love.
The theatre company produces a large-scale musical each year, and director Danny Gibson is always on the hunt for what could be next.
Gibson said The SpongeBob Musical had previously been on Broadway and was perfect for his large cohort of 60 students.
"For some, it's been a return to watching and becoming familiar with SpongeBob, but for many others it's introducing them to this world of optimism, fun and diversity," he said.
Students have been rehearsing for the past three months to get the finished product ready.
"They have been developing their skills in singing, dancing and acting," Gibson said. "[The show is] really colourful, it's really zany, it's out there and it has the most incredible musical theatre score."
The musical has been specifically designed as a show for families to enjoy together, or for anyone who needs a little optimism and joy in their day.
"You will leave thinking those 60 young people have just entertained me, but also provided me with great hope for our future," Gibson said.
The set design and costume choices tackle some of the deeper conversations in society about sustainability.
"We have been learning through the arts about the world we live in," Gibson said.
"[The SpongeBob Musical] is our comment on how our choices impact our oceans and planet, and how it has a flow on effect."
The musical hit the Princess Theatre stage on Tuesday and will run until August 12. Tickets via the Theatre North website.
