With United's round-16 clash against Olympia having been played as April's A-League curtain-raiser, byes in round 13 and 17 mean the side will have taken to the field just twice between the 2-0 win at Taroona on July 3 and next week's visit of Kingborough.

Heading into the second of those byes, co-coaches Lynden Prince and Frank Compton say the situation is far from ideal, particularly as the team has rediscovered winning form and has a fit-again Madi Gilpin itching to return.

"All the squad have been training well but two weeks off was not ideal having fought hard for wins in the last couple of weeks," Prince said.

"With no game again this week we will look at an extra training run on Saturday morning."

The flip side for United is that, having not conceded in three straight wins, they can boast an unblemished seven-week defensive record.

And the coaches used some canny psychology to help secure the points in their last fixture at bottom-placed Taroona.

"It was tough because we should have had four or five in the first half but could not put the ball in the net and you do start to wonder if it's not going to be your day," Prince said.

"I told the girls that Devonport had beaten Olympia and said: how much do you want second spot?"

Olympia Warriors have a marginally superior goal difference so are hanging onto second spot with a game in hand and the teams due to meet in their final fixture at Birch Avenue.

Prince said Gilpin has been "keen as mustard" to return from the wrist injury sustained in the statewide cup final. The versatile midfield lynchpin has been training with a cast on and should return next week.
