The 20-year-old qualified sixth fastest for the final, finishing in a commonwealth record time of 8.13.83 from lane seven, 1.26 behind Katie Ledecky.
Titmus sat in second after the first of 16 laps, marginally behind Ledecky, staying in the silver medal position for the race's entirety - sitting 2.27 seconds behind the victor at the penultimate touch.
Becoming Tasmania's first individual gold medallist and just the third Australian after Shane Gould and Ian Thorpe to complete the 200m and 400m freestyle double earlier in the week, Titmus' Games campaign has broken new ground.
The 400m win brought out the enthusiastic side of coach Dean Boxall, while the pair shared an emotional embrace after the 200m completed the double.
She swam the opening leg of the 4x200m freestyle relay team which claimed bronze before finishing second in her 800m heat.
Her campaign has prompted the City of Launceston to consider naming the 50-metre competition pool at the Launceston Leisure and Aquatic Centre in her honour, a move which has harboured a positive response.
