Premier Peter Gutwein has urged fans to guard against complacency as AFL fever gets set to hit Launceston this weekend.

"Absolutely, be mindful of social distancing, make sure that you use the Check in TAS app when you come to the game and most importantly, be personally responsible," he said.

"Bring a mask and let's enjoy the game, it'll still be just as much fun."

The game at UTAS Stadium is the first Launceston sporting event to require the crowd to wear masks while at the match.

Children under the age of 12 are exempt from wearing a mask at the game according to public health advice.

Attendance will be capped at 10,000 with both sides planned to fly out of Tasmania straight after the game due to strict travel restrictions.

Hawthorn community manager David Cox said the club was excited to play in front of their passionate Tasmanian fanbase.

"We're still operating in a dynamic and environment amd we hope that the enjoyment people get out of attending the football can provide a moment of happy distraction," he said.

The state government has been pushing the case for a Tasmanian team to join the AFL in the coming years.

Mayor Albert van Zetten hoped that another passionate crowd would continue to highlight Launceston's case.

"We want to continue to tell a message to the AFL that we love our football, we want to see football here and this is one of the best surfaces and a great facility that we have in our city," he said.

"We want to see people come out and support that, continue to tell the AFL that we want to see top class football and we will support top class football."
