Magistrate Sharon Cure said Joshua James Strange caused a lot of harm to people and businesses during a time when they were struggling last year.

Strange pleaded guilty to a string of burglaries and stealings across Northern Tasmania.

"People get up in the morning and their tools are gone," Ms Cure said.

"The value of some of the items was very high."

She said people's lives were impacted by Strange's addiction to methylamphetamine. Police prosecutor Mike Bonde read facts on the crime spree.

In April Strange was caught in possession of a stolen trailer worth $10,000 which he bought from a mate for $1000. In an interview with police he said he knew it was too good to be true.

In March he was caught for speeding and running a red light on the West Tamar Highway. In a search police found a knuckleduster, laser pointer, flick knife and three quantities of ice in his car.

In January he was caught in possession of specialist survey equipment worth $19,000.

He stashed it in his wardrobe after buying it for $100 from a mate who needed $100. Police found two cannabis plants and a home made taser.

"He told police he bought the taser for $30 for self protection and accidentally used it on himself saying it felt like a electric fence shock and it made his fingers go tingly," Mr Bonde said.

In February he went to Liffey and stole tools and equipment from Australian Bush Heritage.

He pleaded guilty to burglary and stealing from a Killafaddy business last year including $17,000 worth of tools. Police found a high-grade DNA match linking Strange to the crime.

He entered the Ringarooma Golf Club and stole $2260 worth of equipment including a Honda lawn mower, brush-cutter and an air compressor.

"Police found a tailor made cigarette butt and a forensic examination resulted in a high-grade DNA match," Mr Bonde said.

The court heard that Strange went with a friend and was pacing around, smoked about 20 cigarettes, but "just wanted to get out of there". The property was taken to the friend's place and Strange received nothing from the job.

In December 2020 he was caught with seven grams of ice and $150 worth of stolen car parts after being caught drug driving while disqualified. Ms Cure activated a suspended sentence of two months. She sentenced him to a drug treatment order with a potential jail term of eight months if he breached the conditions.
