That's according to Don River Railway general manager Barry Pickett after Premier Peter Gutwein announced on Saturday the government would make another $7.5 million in vouchers available from August to September 24.
"We have come off the back of a good school holidays and were relying on interstate tourists to help us through to the next school holidays, but because of the border closures we have had a significant drop off," Mr Picket said.
"I would say we have had a 30 per cent drop off in numbers and that is a lot when you are a small operation."
Tasmanians will be able to pre-register for a lottery type system for a voucher rather than the online application process that was used in 2020.
West By North West director and Circular Head Tourist Association president Clint Walker praised the move to make the vouchers more fair and equitable.
"How they rolled it out last time was unfair because there were a lot of people that couldn't get onto a computer at the right time and missed out," he said.
"I am really happy to see the government taking this proactive step.
"I believe the vouchers are one of the best forms of government assistance because it stimulates the public to travel and spend their own money coupled with the government funding."
Mr Walker said the Stanley Seaview Inn, which he operates, had strong bookings for spring but the status of the border closures would be crucial for the industry.
"If they don't get on top of the situation in our key source markets of NSW and Victoria we won't have our spring season," he said.
"It is great we are getting Tasmanians travelling but there are only so many that can support our industry. We are very concerned these lockdowns will continue."
