TREVALLYN DAM PLAN
WOW, what a brilliant suggestion from Richard Jones: install a mini hydro scheme at the base of Trevallyn Dam to generate electricity while restoring South Esk River flows (The Examiner, July 17).

South Esk flows, which used to flow in to the upper reaches of the kanamaluka/Tamar Estuary, were diverted 66 years ago to fuel Trevallyn power station.
Just as we need blood to flow unhindered through our veins (if it doesn't happen we get crook, sometime seriously so), this is exactly what is happening with the estuary (especially the Cataract Gorge) deprived of its natural flushing river flows.
As Mr Jones points out, development in turbine technology has improved remarkably in recent years and there is no doubt installation of such a utility at Trevallyn Dam would significantly benefit, in addition to tourism, the environmental health of the estuary while still generating power for Hydro Tasmania.
It's a 'win win' for everyone - go for it Hydro.

BAKERY CONTRIBUTION
I would like to contribute to Paul Scambler's recommendations for Tasmanian bakeries (The Sunday Examiner, July 18) by adding the Dunalley Bakery.
The Examiner photographer may recollect the former Ashton's Bakery at Campbell Town, which traded over two generations and left an indelible mark on the Midland's town and travelling experience.
The people of Scottsdale are very fortunate to have the Cottage Bakery, which may create temptation guilt or lost restraint?

OUR MOST IMPORTANT RACE
At the Tokyo Olympics, we can be certain that Australians will receive awards and plaudits. Ditto at that important global climate conference in Glasgow later this year?
Unfortunately, Australia seems to be heading to Glasgow exposed as a laggard in the race to avoid catastrophic climate change, unwilling to help the world's and our national interests by comprehensively embracing our potential as a global renewable energy super-power.
It doesn't bode well when our Deputy MP is implacably opposed to a net zero by 2050 emissions reduction target.
What kind of leader fails to recognise that time is of the essence in our most important race?

NEED FOR A NORTHERN PRISON
WRAP needs to have a good hard look at themselves and a good think about what they're against.
I bet 90 per cent of them complain about the justice system and lack of punishment for a lot of the criminal activity that goes on in society.
We need a Northern prison, but hey as long as its not in your backyard.
