TasWater confirmed a number of properties on Westbury Road, Guinness Court, Luxmore Place and Caroline, Bertha and Prospect streets have been affected.
Although crews are on site, TasWater said water service is not expected to be restored for another five hours.

"We are asking pedestrians and road users to avoid the area while we carry out the repairs. TasWater acknowledges the inconvenience caused and thanks the public for their patience," a spokesperson said.
Once water is restored, residents have been warned their water could be temporarily cloudy or dirty in appearance.
If this happens, people are advised to run an outside tap closest to the water meter for 10 minutes until the water runs clear.
