After finishing 38th overall and helping his INEOS Grenadiers teammate Richard Carapaz to third in Paris on Sunday, the 36-year-old Tasmanian boarded a flight to Japan with just six days before he will contest the road race.

Porte, who returns to Launceston from his European home in Monaco every summer, will also compete in the individual time trial four days later and has become accustomed to huge travel demands after 12 years on the elite WorldTour.

"Maybe it's more of an advantage for us Aussies because we do long haul flights and jet lag every year," he said.

"It's never nice but I'm not too bad with it and you do get better at dealing with it."

Porte, who is making his second Olympic appearance having crashed out in Rio five years ago, has long been preparing for the busiest month of his year.

"To come out of three weeks of really hard racing and then have six days to recover is not easy.

The trick is to keep the body going so it does not totally shut down so that will be my main goal.

"But when you have a goal like the Olympics, you put everything to the back of your mind in order to get into a good routine.

"And maybe it's a benefit to be straight after the Tour having done all the proper training before that so then you're just turning up and not really worrying about having to get the miles in."

At noon on Saturday, Porte will lead an Aussie team featuring Rohan Dennis, Luke Durbridge and Lucas Hamilton on a 244-kilometre course with an elevation gain of 4865 metres ending at the Fuji International Speedway racetrack and taking in the lower slopes of Mount Fuji.

COVID restrictions mean riders are not meant to stop if they scout the course but, despite such limitations, Porte is determined to enjoy the experience more than the 2016 Games which he finished in hospital with a broken scapula.

"It will be an Olympics like no other with no real chance to see much but I'll be able to enjoy it a lot more even though it is so different from normal.

"In my mind I thought Tokyo would be one of the best Games to do and then this pandemic threw a spanner in the works, but the fact that the Games are going ahead is the main thing and just massive.

"I've been to Japan a couple of times and love the country and when I saw the course I was very motivated to make sure I was there.

"Having 5000 metres of altitude gain is a lot and the humidity is ridiculously hot but the Tour is good preparation in a lot of ways to be able to adapt to the heat.

"I'm not just turning up for the tracksuit. I want to be there performing as well."

On Wednesday, July 28, Porte and South Australia's two-time world champ Dennis will also represent Australia in the individual time trial over two laps of a 22.1km course featuring a total of 846m elevation.

Porte has twice finished in the top six at time trial world championships but was denied the chance to contest the event in Rio by his crash in the road race.

After a podium finish in last year's Tour de France, Porte has had a stellar 2021, claiming his traditional stage win on Willunga Hill in Adelaide before finishing second, second and first respectively in week-long tours at the Volta a Catalunya, Tour de Romandie and Critérium du Dauphiné.

His stunning cycling resume also includes wins at Paris-Nice (2013 and '15), Tour Down Under (2017 and '20), Tour de Suisse ('18) and Giro del Trentino ('15).

In other Tasmanian Olympic cycling news, Perth's Georgia Baker is listed to contest both the team pursuit and madison.

South Australian Annette Edmondson will partner the 26-year-old in both and is also scheduled to represent Australia in the omnium.

Ashlee Ankudinoff (NSW) and Alex Manly (SA) will make up the team pursuit quartet.

Team pursuit qualifying is on Monday, August 2, at 4.54pm with round one and finals a day later while the madison is a straight final on Friday, August 6.

Baker, Edmondson, Ankudinoff and Penguin's Amy Cure finished fifth in the team pursuit in Rio days after crashing badly in training. The same foursome plus Manly claimed world championship gold in Poland in 2019 when Baker and Cure also won silver in the madison.
