In a push to position Launceston as Tasmania's home of food and agriculture, a bid has been submitted to UNESCO to name Launceston as a City of Gastronomy.
In line with this bid, the inaugural agriCULTURED event was set to celebrate Northern Tasmania's bounty of produce with a vibrant program of events and activities.
From August 5 to 8, Launceston will play host to a range of events and workshops that aim to celebrate and explore our relationship with agriculture.
A key event in the four-day program was a Meet the Producers dinner at Grain of the Silos restaurant.
Grain of the Silos food director Massimo Mele was one of Tasmania's most celebrated chefs and an advocate for paddock to plate cooking.
The dining event invites guests to dine with the producers of the food they're eating.
"It's an opportunity to introduce our producers to our guests and give them some insight in to what it takes to grow the vegetables or raise the animals that we use in the restaurant," Mele said.
"So it's a great way to showcase their products, showcase what they do and how we interpret it in the restaurant."
For Mele, the dinner event was something he had been working on for the past 18 months.
Cultivating his relationships with producers and suppliers had been key to his role as food director and he saw the dining event as a way to thank them.
Chairwoman and co-founder of FermenTasmania Kim Seagram AM hoped the event would encourage Northern Tasmania to be proud of its agricultural industry.
"I think we kick really well above our weight, but we are really humble about it," she said.
