The Tasmania Fire Service was called to the location at 11.15pm after a report of a structure fire - with crews from Scottsdale responding to find smoke coming from a closed section of the toilet block.
A Tasmania Police spokesperson said that one toilet was damaged in the incident.
A Facebook post by the Dorset Council said the toilet block would be closed for some time as a result.
"Significant damage, possibly structural has been sustained to the Sideling toilets due to vandalism and fire," the post read.
"Unfortunately the facility will be unusable to the public for a period of time whilst costly repairs are undertaken.
"Council and police are currently investigating this senseless act of vandalism which not only costs council valuable time and money but also impacts the wider community."
The Sideling Lookout is popular with interstate tourists visiting the area.
Anybody with information in relation to the fire or suspicious activity in the area around that time is asked to contact police on 131 444 or anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
