About 5am on Friday, emergency services responded to the scene on Old Bangor Tram Road, Mount Direction, after reports of a car hitting a tree.
Tasmania Police Inspector Ruth Orr said police were notified by a group of people travelling along the road, who performed CPR.

Despite their efforts to save the man's life, she said the 57-year-old man was pronounced dead after paramedics arrived.
"From observations by investigators, the vehicle had crashed for quite some time before passersby found it," she said.
"We appreciate the assistance they tried to provide."
While the police investigation is ongoing, Inspector Orr said initial inquiries revealed the driver was not wearing a seatbelt.
She said this likely contributed to his fatal injuries.
According to police, the white Mazda utility veered off a straight stretch on Old Bangor Tram Road before hitting a tree about one kilometre east of the Dalrymple Road intersection.
It is believed at this stage the man was travelling home about 10 kilometres from the crash site.
She said it is yet to be determined whether icy roads, speed or an attempt to dodge an animal on the road contributed to the crash.
But this tragedy is a reminder to the public to take care on Tasmanian roads, Inspector Orr said.
"Particularly at this time of year where there are weather conditions that do come into play with frost and ice on the road. Please adhere to the driving conditions and put your seatbelt on," she said.
Police have notified the man's family and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
