THE leaving age for children in Tasmanian schools has effectively been raised to 18 years. This is the impact of the government's policy of extending years 11 and 12 to practically all secondary schools. I applaud the policy. In a tight jobs market, qualifications are the key to employment opportunities.

Those extra two years are vital in reaching higher skills and greater maturity. And the schools these more mature young adults attend also reap benefits in the modelling they provide.
Students should only leave a school earlier than 18 to take unemployment as apprentices or to begin fellowships.
However, we are not quite there yet as the percentage of students completing Year 12 is still too low. Aspirations also need lifting.

Building Process
WITH the building approval process of Tasmanian councils being privatised since 2004, the possibility/potential for a conflict of interest may occur between service provider and client.
For example, if a service provider does not meet the expectations of a client/developer, the aforesaid provider may not receive future work referrals. Contrary to this example, if a client's expectations are met with a short-term philosophy, it may be at the long-term expense of a future purchaser.
The above potential conflict of interest is of considerable disadvantage to the majority of diligent clients/developers and service providers, who provide a professional process to the benefit of the public/private good.

Talk of War
WHEN I see and hear 'through the media what is going on with China and the way that country is heading, I can only liken it to be the new China Nazi party it is clearly no different from the ways of the past (WW II).
I certainly wouldn't rely on the UK for back up, we did more for them than they did for us, great Allies such as the US, India, Europe and alike whether you like it or not is our committed backing.
What we're seeing right now is real, you can either put your head in the sand or open your eyes, yes we are dealing with the potential of some weapons beyond our imagination and we would love nothing more for those weapons to only be a threat.
Our greed has been an addiction with China for a long time and while we are just focusing on that China quietly behind the scenes is nibbling away all over the world at different countries for property and ports, slowly increasing their foothold.
They have fed off our greed for a long time and we now have to change our ways and have a good look at ourselves.
Such talk of war from ministers is not surprising at this stage.
It's nothing new.
We hear it all the time from politicians all over the world every day.
