Mr Smith confirmed on Sunday that he had accepted a position as the Western Australia Liberals state director.
That position was left vacant by Sam Calabrese after the party's devastating election loss in this year's state election which left the Liberals with just two seats in Parliament.

Mr Smith replaced former Tasmanian party state director Sam McQuestin in 2019.
He was credited as having worked on the last three election campaigns prior to the appointment.
He was the party's assistant federal director in 2016.
Tasmanian Liberal Party president Rod Scurrah said Mr Smith's campaigning skills were a major factor in the party's win in this year's state election.
"Stuart's new position in Western Australia is testament to his outstanding contribution to the Tasmanian division," he said.
Mr Smith will remain employed by the party until after its state council meeting on July 24.
The Liberals have pre-selected its Senate ticket for the next federal election with sitting senator Jonathon Duniam at the top of the ticket followed by Launceston-based senator Wendy Askew and Eric Abetz in the third spot.
State election candidate Susie Bower has been pre-selected to run against Labor's Brian Mitchell in Lyons.
Braddon's Gavin Pearce and Bridget Archer in Bass are expected to be pre-selected to retain their seats.
Former MHR Ross Hart has been pre-selected by Labor to run in Bass.
