Chief steward Scott Quill said Wells, 20, sustained a suspected broken femur bone just above her knee.
The normal recovery time for femoral fractures is four to six months.
The meeting was delayed by 40 minutes as Wells had to be stabilized by ambulance staff before she could be transported to the Burnie hospital.
The delay meant the last race on the program had to be abandoned as it could not be run 30 minutes before sunset, as required.
Quill said Wells had "a hard fall" from Gee Gee Devonboy in the seventh race "when it appeared the horse became unbalanced racing between other runners."
However the exact cause of the fall will be determined at an inquiry that was opened and adjourned until stewards can talk to Wells and other riders.
Wells had been successful earlier in the day on Sizzkye, her third winner in 27 rides.
Her first win came at her very first race ride on Gee Gees Cricket at Spreyton on May 9.
Sizzkye came from last in a small field to win the Class 1 Plate for trainer Vern Poke who recently celebrated his 80th birthday.
MIXED LUCK FOR VETERAN JOCKEY
Veteran jockey Dianne Parish had mixed fortunes at the meeting, landing her second win of the season but also suspended for a whip offence.
Parish, who rides in races only sparingly, broke a nine-year drought when she won on Moonlight Escapade at Spreyton 12 months ago.
She scored again on Sardegna Deel at the same track in October and on Sunday landed the Rating 60 Handicap on outsider Lady Joker.
However stewards suspended Parish for one meeting for her whip use on Sardegna Deel in an earlier race.
She will ride at Spreyton next Sunday and miss Elwick the following week.
APPRENTICE'S GOOD RUN CONTINUES
Irish apprentice Erica Byrne Burke continued her hot run of form with a win on favourite Cheeky One in the Class 1 Handicap.
Byrne Burke, who is apprenticed to Cheeky One's trainer Adam Trinder, didn't ride her first winner until May 30.
She has now ridden seven winners at the past four meetings.
Cheeky One raced fifth on the fence before easily overhauling her rivals to score by two lengths.
Siggy Carr took riding honours at the meeting with a double on Dargo and Master Truffles.
Master Truffles, trained by Gary White, was the longest-priced winner on the program, starting at $61 after much longer odds were bet.
Carr was forced to race three wide outside the leaders for much of the race but Master Truffles was still able to run down favourite Needarein to score by almost a length.
