Mission Health recently received a donation of flu vaccines, clinical hand wash and masks from Rio Tinto, which will now be used to protect those who might otherwise go without this winter.

Operated through City Mission, the nurse-led service has been operating for the past two years, working to bridge the gap in access to health services.

Mission Health's nurse practitioner Jane Laidlaw said while access to healthcare was considered a fundamental human right, for many this wasn't the reality.

"This donation means that we can provide flu vaccinations to people who otherwise would miss out, whether this is due to their poor living circumstances, lack of access to healthcare or they simply can't afford the cost," she said.

"With flu season upon us we know vaccination is the most effective way to prevent such illnesses and everyone should be able to access healthcare regardless of their situation."

Every Thursday, Mission Health offers a range of free services, including general health assessments, chronic health management, sexual health testing and immunisations.

Ms Laidlaw said its aim was to break down the barriers between homelessness and access to healthcare, with the Rio Tinto donation already used to vaccinate 25 people in the community.

"A lot of our clients struggle to manage their healthcare, whether due to mental illness or social isolation," she said.

"They are often voiceless and don't know how to navigate the healthcare system or even what to ask for.

"Many don't have a GP, or they might have some concerns or difficulties making appointments or getting to them."

City Mission is one of four charities supported by The Examiner's Winter Relief Appeal.
