In fact, the 13-year-old has started to make his mark on the national stage, emerging as one of the state's most promising walkers.

Most recently, Lindsay was one of 11 Newstead Athletics club members who ventured to Sydney for the Australian Track and Field Championships.

"It was nice, it was warm, but not too warm which was good," he said.

"The track was nice - it was a blue track which matched my blue shoes."

But the nice, blue track wasn't the only thing on Lindsay's mind, with the young gun topping his personal best by a minute and a half while finishing second in the under-14 walk.

"It felt good after, but while I was doing it I was quite sore," Lindsay said.

"Afterwards, I was thinking 'woah, that is quite fast'.

"It was like the Toyota ad - 'still feeling it' literally."

Lindsay admitted that athletic walking wasn't every 13-year-old's cup of tea, but for him it is bread and butter.

"I just started doing it and really enjoyed it and I took it up because people were saying I could really do well with it," he said.

"You need to do a couple of walk-outs, to make sure your technique's good first. You also need to work on your stamina and you have to have core strength, because if you slouch you tend to break contact."

Lindsay will hope to continue his top form at a number of upcoming athletics competitions later this year.

"There's all-schools in December which I'll be hoping to make, and next year there's nationals in Perth," he said.
