The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a flood watch for the next few days and is expecting to issue a strong weather warning, with wet and windy conditions battering the north and west of the state.
The weather pattern is being brought on by a slow-moving cold front, bringing with it strong winds and rain.
Rainfall totals across the north until the end of Tuesday are expected to be 30 to 50 millimetres, with higher falls up to 100 millimetres possible on the Western Tiers.
A flood watch is current for the north west, north and north east catchment areas, with river rises expected overnight Monday into Tuesday.

Minor flooding is possible at some locations from Tuesday afternoon.
A low is predicted to form in the eastern Bass Strait overnight on Tuesday that will quickly deepen, bringing strong and gusty southeasterly winds to north eastern Tasmania - particularly overnight Wednesday and early Thursday.
Southeasterly winds about the northeast will average around 70 km/h, with gusts to 100 km/h.
A severe weather warning for damaging winds is anticipated to be issued from Wednesday evening to Thursday morning for coastal parts of the north east and Flinders Island.
Conditions will ease from later Thursday as the low pressure system decays.
